Description

Synopsis

In a peaceful part of the town, a series of deaths occur, seemingly random at first, but gruesome in their nature. One day, you find an object that doesn't belong in your house. An old, worn-out, stained mirror. That is the very moment when you'll discover that the simple mirror isn't the only thing that is out of place.

Explore the thriving streets of the small suburban area, search through the abandoned houses stained by gruesome past, and find out what haunts you through the silver pane of glass. As the game progresses and the more you approach the root of all horror, you'll realise that not everything is what it seems.

Peace together fragments of the past events, read between the lines, and look at things from a different perspective. All alone in the crowd, the cold grip of a confused and consuming rage will coarse through your veins.

Features:
  • A detailed and AI populated game world.
  • A Haunting game atmosphere and soundtrack.
  • Make the most of the Mirror mechanic - some things are not what they seem at first glance.
  • A Gripping story woven through the environment, puzzles and in-game events.
  • Mystery style game-play. You must explore and search out clues and objects. The game will not hold you hand.
  • Multiple choice endings.

Reviews about the game

Joana's Life17.09.2016

"Joana's Life" is a complete mess of a game. It has so many flaws, I'm having difficulty keeping track of them. First of all, when you begin the game, you are presented with some keys that you cannot pick up because it would break sequence. You're also presented with a glowing flashlight you also cannot pick up, because it will break sequence. This is the type of game you're playing with Joana's Life - it's a mess. Towards the end, the game will start teleporting you random places without any transition or explanation. You'll even get to go on a Slender: Eight Pages-esque item hunt! None of it makes any sense, and all semblance of story gets thrown out the window in favor of cheap jumpscares and nonsensical game design. Thoroughly terrible. Not recommended, and certainly not for $7. That's highway robbery for a game like this.

Joana's live is a first-person adventure horror game: You take the role of an unnamed protagonist who investigates the mysterious events that surround his (or her) house. The game has a fairly unique mechanic: You can use a mirror to see what's behind you, and it won't always be what you can see directly with your eyes. Joana's Life looks quite nice and is very atmospheric. Unfortunately, the game is rather tedious. It does give you objectives, but often times forces you to spend time walking around aimlessly. The developers mentioned that they didn't want to hold the player's hand - which is fine, but that doesn't excuse poor level design. The game also features enemies. Killing enemies doesn't seem to be possible, but avoiding them isn't very difficult, so they end up being more of a nuisance than an actual challenge. On top of that, there are performance issues and bugged scripts and triggers. Ultimately, Joana's Life is just yet another Steam first-person horror game. It does have some potential, but I can't recommend it in its current state. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crW7ehXQb9w

Guidance is an important aspect of a good horror game. Sometimes it's obvious, sometime's it's more a cry of "Ooh, interesting thing this way!", subtly guiding you past the invisible walls you never even noticed were there. Joana's Life... Does none of that. And that hurts it as a game. No, you can't pick up the front door keys yet. Why? Because you haven't touched the mirror and thrown it away. Once you've worked out how to leave the house (A protracted process, not because the individual steps are difficult, but because you have to find them in roughly the right order or way, with little to no guidance), you have to go to a specific house... In an entire block, strangely walled off (Something I found more unsettling than the intentional scares, which were predictable as heck... Not least because they won't happen until you've done the thing it wasn't telling you how to do.) Yes, I've tried it, and you can explore the entire block (Very slowly, because of *course* there's an unseen stamina meter, and *of course* walking speed is moderately slow), and if, like me, you then forgot where you were meant to go, your only sign is that it's the only door that opens that isn't your house. You don't know who you are (Although, judging by the panting noises, you're a man.) There's no context for a lot of this, except the odd newspaper article in broken english. While it's a short game if you can predict what it's asking you, it's by no means a good game, where its supposedly core gimmick is used... Er... Once. Another gimmick gets introduced, but has more frustration than use, as it's on a cooldown, and slow to direct when it is used. Shame it's necessary! There's no real story here, not even a narrative, and it doesn't work as a haunted house type experience either, because there's little to no guidance.

They preface the game to you as one that 'doesn't hold your hand'. Well, it really doesn't do anything else either. I may bit a bit cranky due to the hour(it's 5am and I've had no coffee) but I was looking for some decent indie spoops and have found none here. This game is nothing short of a mess. This title is so messy that I felt like I was playing with it still being in alpha phase(completely unpolished). I always do my best to give most games a chance since they usually have their own sort of charm but this game left me with a feeling that I imagine feels like blue balls for men. I was ripe and ready! I was hot to trot! But no release because it felt like the game did not want to be played. Not even by my spicy latin self. Look keys! Nope, can't pick them up! Why? Because screw you, we're not holding your hand! Want that green highlighted fllashlight? Too bad! Sod off and go play something else, we're not gonna hold your hand! Not sure what you're supposed to do once you jump through all the hoops just to get out of the house?? Oh well, I guess you better be psychic because no one is going to hold your hand! Hahahueuehuahuahuahauha!! This game took my money and left me with a feeling of righteous indignation.

Joana's Life02.09.2016

The beginning feel of this game is very eerie and puts you into a very unsettled state of mind, which the game does well to build upon. The jumpscares in this game are great when they occur and when I first obtained the mirror I was afraid of using it. I think that this game could do great if it built upon that fear of using the mirror. Sure we need to see through it to proceed and find out next objective, but what about putting some jumpscares into it where you use the mirror and bam, creepy demonic creature is right there! As for the story and the world the game is in, I feel it needs more work. I feel like there is a lack of a sense of direction in the game. Although I am given an objective such as "leave the house" or "find the girl" outside of the objective written, It is very difficult to find out what specifically was demanded of me. On multiple occassions I would find myself repeating an action over and over again, walking past the same things time and time again, and then what seems to be completely at random, an event occurs. I will have no idea what triggered the event because I have done the same thing time and time again with no reaction prior. In summary the foundation of scares and overall creepy demeanor in this game is good, but as for the story and the sense of direction as to what to do and where this game is going is missing for me. I would recommend this game to other horror fans with a 6/10. In the future I intend to return to this game because I really do believe this has the potential to be a horrifying game, but until then it needs work.

My wife and I played through the game and while we had a decent time in parts of the game other parts were tedious and unrelated to the game play. There is a portion of the game that is just a time sink. The game is a bit glitchy and we had to restart more than once during our playthrough. The parts that the game does well it does very well but I feel like the main tool in the game is severly under utilized. I have attached some gameplay footage that contains spoilers so watch at your own risk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGmqHGRZfSQ
