All in all I'd rate this a 7.5/10, wait for a sale to buy this game and it will 100% be worth it. Pretty damn fun. Combat in the early game feels clunky but once you unlock more perks and moves the combat QOL immediately improves. Really fun to combo the shit out of mobs and bosses. The only mobs I have a real complaint about is the fat asses with the shields. They consistently broke my combos and I would have to cheese the fuck out of them in order to make the scenario playable. There was one scenario where there were 4 of them and I had to lower the difficulty. If you're wanting to play for plot, the plot is kinda interesting but you won't see much being fleshed out during game play. There is a lot of collectible lore items and they might flesh out a lot of the mythology and such behind the monsters and actual eldritch horrors you fight, however I haven't ready any of the lore items I collected so take that with a grain of salt. Visuals and the aesthetic of the visuals are unironically stunning. Do be careful though because I would keep running to graphical bugs that would often lead to the game crashing and rarely would cause windows to completely removing my GPU drivers and software. Very very odd, however IMO the fun from the game outweighs the issues. There is a multiplayer game mode where you can play through the campaign with friends n shit. The progression of the game is based on host's progression and the difficulty is set to normal by default (I think?) and scales higher and higher with each player. I believe there is a max of 4 allowed players in one game but I've yet to play it. Would be pretty interesting to see a PvP game mode for this game. Not much to go off of soundtrack, based on the trailers i thought they were either gonna have a killer OST or just a really good western rock/dark country soundtrack with some Blues Saraceno so I was somewhat disappointed with that.

Thank you to the developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Focus Entertainment for providing another exciting and challenging action game for me to explore, fight, rage and rage again. My Steam review rating: Positive I have said forever Guns+Magic is a perfect recipe for any action game and Evil West proves that formula still works extremely well. It's reminiscent of some of my favorites in the genre(Outriders and Remnant from the Ashes) and never lets up in the action while told with a good story that is very familiar. Evil West is a re-imagining of the old west where vampires, werewolves and demons are real. You play as Jesse Reinterre, a member of a Gov entity called the REI institute. This was established by your father where it is your Co. job to rid the west of the evil that has plagued the land. It's a solid set up, good voice acting, writing, characters and cut scene direction. The story reminded me of the movie Blade. There is even a scene early showing the two antagonists, an older Vampire Peter D’ Abano and his young daughter Felicity proclaiming to the elders, either rule the world or fall victim to the evolving humans who have reached the steam age. Their denial from the elders to start an all out war with humans chain reacts into the events that will be taking you across pretty exciting 16 missions and depending on difficulty 12-15+ hrs campaign(I have 60hrs thru 3 full playthroughs). One thing on cut scenes is they sometimes will end abruptly or you will even approach what is a cut scene, and then you are back in the game. While it doesn't affect the overall story, either scenes were removed(you only see the elders at the start) or maybe they were not completed? I Don't know, its just weird. *On Difficulty, you can choose from story, normal, hard, or Evil but the game is meant to be played thru multiple times. If you DON'T want to reach def-con 5 levels of rage, start on Normal. You will thank me later. The heart of all FWH games is fast, manage cool down, arena style combat and it is all here, maybe just not as fast. The difference here prior to their other games is this in 3rd person and while you still get that dash move, you also get to roll. All weapons are on a cool down and your special abilities and upgrades evolve around the power of the era, electricity. This is why I love their earlier titles such as Shadow Warrior and Hard Reset, and why I love this game. You will constantly be switching thru every weapon which includes revolver, rifle, crossbow, gatling gun, grenades, and flamethrower in almost every fight. However, the main weapon of the game is the Reinterre Gauntlet which is fully highlighted in the main menu. You will be pulling, throwing, slamming, punching everything in sight and it's fantastic. All weapons have upgrade trees which require blueprints and money to unlock but the gauntlet will be upgraded as you level. Its tree is unique as it will give special abilities to perform those massive damage combos by collecting glowing orbs that drop from defeated enemies. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3009149573 As an arena game the enemy variety, the mob and boss fights have to be fun and it does so here almost perfectly. There is a large variety of enemies to combat and early game is pretty manageable with basic cannon fodder but around mid game the real challenge begins with enemies who shield the mobs and also heals them. That’s to name a few of the many types you will encounter and all when mixed together provide a good challenge. You will be rolling, dashing and doing everything you can to collect orbs so you can unleash your ultimate. I can guarantee one thing in this game, in any fight you will never be standing still. I saw some early reviewers complain that the linearity of Evil West was a weak point but I totally disagree. While the game is very linear in design, this game proves that style can still work but having to get a button prompt to climb and jump in only highlighted designated places feels weird in 2023. As the levels are linear and decent size, there are many branching paths that could lead to extra fights, money needed for upgrades, or secret cases containing blueprints for weapons. This makes exploring every corner of the map a must and while there is no map for any level, there is a lore tab that provides info for how many collectibles there are for each level. Some levels will also require solving a few puzzles that open a path which will require shooting an object or transferring electricity to power poles. These are not difficult in any way but are there to provide a breather from combat. You will be fighting in many different locations from the expected Old west town, oil fields, to lumber and train yards to name just a few. Each location will also provide different weather conditions(just recalled that) and it will either be day or night. I think the game looks amazing as the art direction is top notch and as it is an unreal game, expect a crash or two(always happens to me). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3005781665 If you are a fan of the genre or of FWHs previous titles, then this is a no brainer. A solid story, great atmosphere and hard hitting combat from start to finish. I was never bored, but challenged and the pay off at the end of 3 full playthroughs, I wanted more. The game is priced at $40 and if I knew of the replayability that is a fair price but I got it on sale for $20. That was a steal. Positives Awesome SP action game from start to finish Complete game, no DLC needed(last patch was a month after release) Jesse is a Hero we need today Story, writing and characters Every location looks amazing Good variety of enemies Fun achievement list to 100% NG+, Chapter select and info on collectibles Negatives 2 late game mob fights feel added Played at 3440x1440 High settings Avg 100FPS Radeon RX 6700XT Amd Ryzen 5 3600 16GB Ram

This game has a lot of potential. I've had some fun playing the game, but there's a few quirks that make it a hard sell, especially for the regular price. I bought it on a sale for half off, but even then I wouldn't recommend. I'd suggest waiting for this game to be at least 75% off before picking it up. TL;DR: Great sense of progression, skill tree and abilities are slowly and constantly unlocked based different factors. The story and world are quite fun due to unconventional characters and tension, voice acting is pretty good. Horrible and laggy inputs, basically unplayable unless you really like dumb deaths and fighting the technical shortcomings of this developer. Coop has some very annying glitches that happen multiple times, making completely reboot & restart game to fix it - which is very experience-breaking. The mechanics are fun and the game does an excellent job in slowly introducing you to new weapons and abilities. Some of the stuff is tied to the progression in the game, you have a decent amount of upgrades that are related to your level, and then there's some bonus upgrades that are tied to collectables ingame. The story line is also pretty good. The voice acting is decent and the character building is also pretty good. There's a decent amount of atypical characters in the game that have an interesting relationship with the character you're playing, which makes for a few plot twists and interesting story in my opinion. The game is very linear in the sense that it's a third person shooter hack and slash game that tells you, very clearly, where to go. You go from open area to open area and fight monsters, after a few repetitions there's a boss, and then at the end there's some more storyline stuff. There's no way you're going to spend more than 5 seconds looking for where to go. You progress through the maps and story, and that's about it. The game is quite challenging, which helps counteract the very linear progression. I found myself lowering the difficulty from normal to easy halfway through to keep the momentum up and get the playing style I wanted (more casual in coop mode). Now, where the game really wrecks it for me and this goes from recommended to NOT recommended. The higher difficulty is challenging and it requires you to react pretty quicklyin such a fast-paced environment. That would be fine and dandy, if it weren't for the fact that the inputs on my mouse and keyboard just wouldn't register 50% of the time. There's folks on the internet stating that it's the players issue, basically "get good". That's absolute bullocks. Even when not in the action and you're grabbing a collectible, I have to stand there and wait for about 5-10 seconds sometimes, repeatedly pressing spacebar or left mouse button for the player to do the thing I want it to do. Imagine that happening when you're attacked by a boss and 5 suicide-enemies coming at you that you have to get away from. Absolutely horrible and unacceptable for a game released over a year ago now. Unbelievable this hasn't been fixed. It just makes for a frustrating experience where I'm repeatedly dying and restarting because keys aren't registering. This isn't "challenge", it's dumb deaths and replaying the same bits over and over because someone didn't care enough to make this work well. In between combat you have to move from area to area. There's transitions that require you to press a few buttons here and there to make it through some of these areas, and there's collectables sprinkled across these crossovers. Sometimes the game makes it really unclear which direction is "forward" for your mission, and which is an area you can explore to gather collectibles. If you choose wrong, you move to the next area, and you can't go back, skipping over collectibles. This isn't the worst thing ever, but with the experience I'm having in this game, I'm for sure not going back again, ever. Why can't I go back? Or with all the super obvious hints on progression, make it clear what's mission and what's collectibles? I've been playing this in coop mode, and in the very short 6 hours I played the game, I've had to restart the game twice and start the session process again because during these crossovers, one of the players gets bugged and stays behind. There's no way to restart the mission or reload a checkpoint or any of the things you would expect a recent game would have, so restarting is your only option. Very frustrating. I keep playing the game every now and then not because I really want to, but because I'm secretly hoping that things will be better later on with new unlocks and abilities and because I want to get somewhat of my money's worth. After an hour I feel disappointed again and I quit, putting the game away for a few days until it repeats. 3/10, could've been great if it wasn't for the glitches and shortcomings.

Great game! Simple and straight forward. Fresh breath of air among dozens of open world games with nothing to do or opposite - waaay to much to do. Graphics are decent but could use some polishing in animations for NPCs. Each level have distinct look and doesn't feel repetitive. From abandoned wild west mining towns to swamps in God know where. Combat is fun and upgrades make it even more fun. It is fluent glory kill system similar to Doom 2016/Eternal.
