Reviews about the game

Disney Speedstorm13.05.2024

Although I have played over 100 hours of Disney Speedstorm, I find myself hesitant to wholeheartedly recommend it to new players. The core gameplay offers an exhilarating experience, with fast-paced races through tracks inspired by beloved Disney properties like Aladdin, Frozen, and Lilo & Stitch. However, the game's reliance on a live service model significantly detracts from its potential greatness. The presence of mundane loot boxes and everything having timers to induce FOMO diminishes the excitement of progression. Certain characters or levels are inaccessible without resorting to spending, which disrupts the fairness of competition and player progression. You are able to spend real money on skins for your characters, however they are just alternate colors of the same racing suite the character wears as their default costume. Furthermore, the seasonal changes implemented by the developers often have a negative impact on the overall gameplay experience. While streamlining certain processes, like the upgrade currency, is appreciated, alterations such as the shift towards the characters' speed stats being the only stat that matters disrupts the balance and enjoyment of races. Additionally, the decision to remove the ability to purchase season passes with in-game currency feels restrictive and counterintuitive. In its current state, despite its enjoyable core gameplay, I cannot recommend Disney Speedstorm.

I've been playing this game since the very first season of the game. I have paid hundreds of dollars into the game and for the longest time really enjoyed the game. It has a great sound track and the original race tracks are great. The newer tracks over the past two seasons are awful. The new race seasons have becoming worse and worse, and now are nearly unbearable. Like I said I've spent money on this game. My gaming budget on this game has been $20 every two months to participate in the golden pass and to be able to collect almost all of the racers each season. The new seasons are near impossible to complete now since you have to spend even more money than that to purchase and upgrade featured racers to complete the season (which I refuse to do). And even worse the new Golden pass design, for me to continue playing as I was I now Have to double my monthly gaming budget on this game. Not sorry, but I refuse to pay more money for more exclusivity. I will still hop on the game once a week to blow off steam. But I no longer will be spending money on this game or even worrying about completing special events/seasons/golden pass. When Gameloft chooses to make the game better I will be here and willing to start spending money and putting more effort into the game again. But until then I refuse. For new players: Be warned. Your gonna have to dish out a pretty penny to catch up or even be able to complete the season race path. Its very discouraging to see so much game play, placed behind such a large pay wall, especially when there have been so many players who have invested so much into this game.

I would love to recommend this game, truly. Gameloft's previous Disney game (Dreamlight Valley) is amazing and generated a lot of good will for me. This one, however, is strictly "mixed" as it stands right now. The gameplay is great. The racing feels good, items feel good, all of that is great. Customization is played a bit too safe for my liking, with all cars looking relatively similar and all outfits being some form of racing suit. As someone who loves cosmetics in games, it leaves a bit to be desired. The roster is diverse and ever-growing, the OST is full of beautiful Disney remixes, and the maps are pretty and fun to play on. The primary negatives with Disney Speedstorm is an awful attempt at monetization and games-as-a-service elements. For one, this game appears to have a lot of gacha elements. Whether you hate gacha or not (I personally enjoy gacha in most cases), it is exceptionally poorly implemented here and simply not enjoyable. It also leads to pay-to-win in certain multiplayer modes (some modes will put everyone on equal footing). Further, collecting characters through this gacha and having to upgrade them via duplicates is really just not an enjoyable form of progression for a kart racer. I have a lot of leniency when it comes to how free-to-play games monetize. I understand microtransactions are a necessary evil to stay afloat, and I understand that these games follow the hypothetical idea that whales (heavy spenders) will pay for everyone else to have a free experience. On paper, this works when done correctly, but can also easily lead to an unfair or enjoyable experience. Disney Speedstorm has it all implemented so poorly that an otherwise very fun game becomes a grind just to unlock characters and make them viable for content. Not to mention, the difficulty curve is quite high (even story mode) and is clearly designed around you having duplicates and well-built characters. At the end of the day, I don't recommend Disney Speedstorm in its current state. I enjoy Disney Speedstorm quite a bit, and would be truly heartbroken were it to shut down due to lack of players and support. However, my hope is that Gameloft will switch course and fix the major issues as opposed to just abandoning the game - the PC market still lacks a good kart racer, and this game *could* be it! But not like this.
