Reviews about the game

Black Skylands24.11.2023
Before the "Official" launch, this game was looking great!
It had Crafting systems, Father-ship customization of buildings, farming, crafting, Cooler ship gun placements, etc. Basically it had A ton of Other things to do then just fighting...... But when I played this game again now? Nothing just nothing. I legit though I had accidentally downloaded the wrong version somehow! The game has been stripped and streamlined to the point of being a play test version. The "good fighting in a cool game with tons of customization, buildings, management, etc" became "Game with JUST fighting." and with no 'game-play breaks' like the alpha game, the fighting gets old F.A.S.T. to the point of boring. Two thirds of my play time has been putting down the controller to walk away to do ANYTHING else. The signs are everywhere that the game was structured with MASSIVE time sinks and game-play loops that now have been stripped clean. Massive amount of resources that you just can't use. Late game Resources can be gathered pre-mid game. SO much Money that you will NEVER use. You can skip half of the islands in the game and still be fully leveled/upgraded before going into the swarm on hard level. For example You now only need 10 wood total, but the game has over 50+ wood resource spots. There are NPC's that give you Items that just.... CAN'T be used anymore in the game. There is no need for money or resources for buildings and customization, so it is just painful as a returning player. Ignore ANY reviews Prior to Main game release. They are a figment of a lost era, damaged by someone who didn't understand what they were doing. Much like the plot of the game itself

I'm with alot of others here who played the Betas... this game had so many other great features that have been stripped away for seemingly no reason. the crafting and customisation has been yanked in favour of a level upgrade system which in all honesty, could 100% of worked side by side with the existing system. hell, even the settlement building has been super dumbed down and stripped back and replaced with a "this is what WE think you need" system. (i genuinely got a laugh having a ship filled with nothing but cabbage farms) Do i recommend it? Yes, but ONLY if you play the pre-full release versions, which i think is telling.

Firstly, I loved this game during Early Access. The release version....not so much. The upgrade system was redesigned for extreme simplicity and total lack of transparency. It's now just "collect money, push upgrade button, hope it helps". It doesn't even tell you the damage that weapons do, so you can't even compare them. Same thing with armor, speed, etc. No way to know which suits you best. Also, and this is why I ultimately stopped playing, previously, you could go to more advanced islands, which was risky, but had the chance for great reward. Not anymore. Now, if you get say, a swarm mod box....it just gives you a tiny sum of coins instead. What a slap in the face. It used to be truly an open world game, now it's just pretending to be.

Ok so first off the game as it is is still ok. I did play in Early Access and found that most of the systems were removed for 1.0. The game has gotten far to streamlined for me and I would have liked to see more gameplay not less moving into a release.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend it. Apparently the whole game mechanic has changed between the early access and the released game. I haven't played the EA, so I can only judge the fully released game, and I liked it at first. The controls just feel nice, although it's true that the gameplay is a bit shallow. Especially on the Steam Deck, I would still recommend the game because it's fun to play, if it weren't for these game-breaking bugs. After about 10 hours I couldn't progress any further because an item I needed kept spawning inside a wall. I googled and found others with the same problem, but apparently the developers don't support the game anymore. They don't answer on the Steam Community bug page or on their Black Skylands Discord bug report section. The worst part is that there are a lot of people reporting (game-breaking) bugs and the developers just don't seem to care. So I CAN'T RECOMMEND buying the game. I might even try to get my money back.

I didn't play the pre-release and was wondering why this game felt so empty outside of combat. This game feels like it's lacking 2-3 extra mechanics outside of the core loop of clear island and upgrade boat/guns which is pretty hollow feeling. The mother-ship also feels like there should have been more to it other than just placing cosmetic items down. There is also what feels like one or two decision that you get to make which feels very out of places or at least underutilised in context of the rest of the game. I would love to see a overhaul of this to flesh out base building and the questlines.
