Reviews about the game

A Plague Tale: Innocence19.09.2023

I can tell it’s one of a kind. The world, characters, voice acting and soundtracks are beautiful. The gameplay even for a story driven game has some complexity to it the further you go along. The story itself is amazing and engaging, 14th Century was a tough period and you will experience that atmosphere in the game is awesome.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is set in the 14th century, in the Kingdom of France where you control 15 year old Amicia de Rune who has not seen her little brother, Hugo, in years. A terrible plague torments the region,
and suddently the English Inquisition is after the siblings. At the start of the journey Hugo does not even know he is connected to the plague and the rats, Amicia was told by her mother Beatrice that their only way to figure out more is to search for an alchemist named Laurentius.
The game is beautiful, and it kept me interested in the story all the way through from start to finish, the soundtrack is also nice. It is quite unique, unlike anything I've ever played before, it quickly became one of my favourites. Well done Asobo Studio, I definitely recommend it, it's a solid 10!

TLDR: Its a story first game second, play it to appreciate the sequel. The story and artwork are impressive in both the 1st and second game.. so play the first if you want to appreciate that. Take it for what it is and its enjoyable.. but if you like to explore.. then don't play this.. as you cannot at all explore in this game. Pros - Looks amazing - Is an excellent story that depending on execution will make a good film, I don't think it has enough content to make a good TV series (which I hear is in production right now). - I kinda want to learn how to use a sling shot, feels like a life skill that anyone should learn. - Sound design and music, are well executed, some great use of dissonance and atmosphere. - Finished in less than 20 hrs, so its a short investment in terms of game time, with some interesting ideas, unique (to me) combat style. - There is a sequel which I am play and some of the cons I mention below are addressed, so its worth playing this for the short investment, just to get the backdrop and see the progression of the game development and efforts. Cons (for me, and has it been improved in the sequel) - Is entirely linear, which I understand is its design, but the more I play games that are linear, the more i realise I just don't enjoy them. There are no decisions to be made.. you just follow the story.. which is a good story I agree.. but I feel like I am just pushing it along.. I addition you are walking through a canvas.. not a world, very little ability to explore or reason to do so.. (So far this look to be the same in the sequel but too early to tell) - Its not that hard (I am 44, so maybe its my age).. but I didn't really get that stuck and all the puzzles all though they build in complexity. (Sequel is harder, you can have more choice on how you progress, all be it linear, and you gain skills based on your handling of certain tools and weapons) - I have two kids and managing Hugo became a little annoying, I game to escape parenting :) (Hugo is still Hugo) - The combat style although unique I got immensely frustrated with selecting what I wanted to use, craft and so on. (Some tweaks to this in the sequel which catch you out actually if you have just played the 1st game.. but they do make some sense and make it easier to select, once i reprogram my muscle memory to use the new navigation of inventory and crafting.) - The crafting is odd, because very early on you can craft anywhere, which makes the concept of tool benches redundant 95% of the time.. and the points in which you can upgrade, are in fact very well set in stone, so although you have some choice in what you upgrade when its actually pretty limited (this reminded me of early games in the new Tomb Raider Series). (Undecided in this, it still feels a little contrived, rather than a choice.. but this might be again just its design) - I died a lot, and it didn't matter if I did, because you just try again..(I would say this goes back to the story nature of the game over the game play itself) - this means you get disconnected from it.. and over time it becomes more of just an exercise to complete the game and tasks other than anything else. (Dying less, because I am skilled sling shot, but on reflection the dying still happens a lot and again, it doesn't really matter if I do, just try again)
